World Pizza Day sounds light-hearted, and it was. But on Saturday 19 September 2026 we used it to ask a serious question: how does Lagos take the world’s food and make it Nigerian?
The idea
Lagos has always been a city of exchange. Portuguese traders, Brazilian returnees, Lebanese merchants and Chinese restaurateurs have all left their mark on what the city eats. Pizza is the newest chapter: a dish that arrived from Italy and is now being reworked with suya spice, pepper sauce and even Jollof base.
