Lagos welcomes millions of visitors every December, and this season has one extra thing to plan around: Nigeria's general elections in January and February 2027. This page brings together what you need to know before you travel. We update it as official guidance changes.
The 2027 elections: what they mean for your trip
| Date | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Now to mid-January | Political campaigns across the country, running through the December season | Avoid rallies and large political gatherings. Allow extra travel time when roads are closed for campaign events. |
| 16 January 2027 | Presidential and National Assembly elections | Plan to stay in. Movement is usually restricted on polling day, and airports and roads may be affected. |
| 6 February 2027 | Governorship and State House of Assembly elections | Same as above. Keep plans flexible for a day or two either side. |
Most Detty December visitors will fly home before the first polling day. If you are staying into January, book flights that avoid 15–17 January, and keep an eye on local news. Dates are from INEC's published timetable; check INEC for any changes.
