Detty December is the five or six weeks when Lagos turns into Africa's biggest homecoming party. Concerts, beach days and late nights take over the city from mid-November to early January. This guide covers when it runs, what is on, what it costs, when to book, and how to make room for the Lagos most visitors never see: its history, art and heritage by day.
What is Detty December?
"Detty" is Nigerian Pidgin for "dirty". The name is a playful nod to a month of doing too much. It started as a nickname for the December party circuit. It is now a full tourism season, with Lagos and Accra competing for the same homecoming crowd.
For most visitors it means concerts at night, beach clubs by day, and a packed social calendar of weddings, owambes and reunions. For many returning families it is also the one time a year the whole family is home together.
Detty December by the numbers
The 2025 season was the largest on record. According to a report by MO Africa Co, published in BusinessDay:
- 3.6 million people took part over 55 days, from mid-November 2025 to 10 January 2026.
- Consumer spending reached ₦396.5 billion, and 55% of it came from diaspora visitors.
- The United States overtook the UK as the largest source of international arrivals, at 27%. Europe followed with 12% and Canada with 11%.
- 70% of visitors were Gen Z or millennials.
- Accommodation took the largest share of spending at 44%, followed by entertainment and nightlife at 33%.
The takeaway for visitors: demand is enormous and it arrives all at once. Planning early matters more than anything else.
The 2026 calendar at a glance
The season warms up in October and peaks in the last two weeks of December. Dates below come from organisers' announcements and published press guides as of September 2026. Always confirm with the organiser before you book travel around an event.

|---|---|---|

Large headline concerts are often announced only in October or November. Follow the organisers' official pages for tickets, and avoid resale sellers you cannot verify.
When to book: a simple timeline
- Now to mid-October: book flights and your hotel or short-let. Press guides report that hotels sell out by October and fares spike in November.
- October: check your entry requirements with the Nigeria Immigration Service. Foreign passport holders need a visa or an approved online application. Carry a yellow fever vaccination certificate.
- November: buy concert tickets. Book your driver and any daytime experiences before the peak weeks fill up.
- December: arrive before about 18 December if you can. Airport queues, traffic and prices all rise sharply after that.
What Detty December costs
December is the most expensive time of year to be in Lagos. Published guides put an independent traveller at roughly US$2,000–3,000 a week, not counting flights. All-inclusive packages start at about US$3,950. Your biggest costs will be where you stay, how you get around, and how many ticketed events you attend.
- Accommodation: expect peak-season rates and minimum-stay rules on short-lets.
- Transport: a private driver for the day often costs less per head than ride-hailing surge pricing, especially for families and groups.
- Payments: cards and bank transfers are widely accepted. Carry some naira for markets, tips and small vendors.
Getting around Lagos in December
Traffic is the one thing every returning Lagosian warns you about. Build each day around one part of the city rather than crossing it twice.
- Lagos Island and Ikoyi: museums, Freedom Park, the Brazilian Quarter and Jazzhole.
- Victoria Island and Lekki: beaches, Nike Art Gallery, the Lekki Conservation Centre and most concert venues.
- West to Badagry: a full day out. Leave early to avoid the worst of the expressway traffic.
A note on the 2027 elections
Nigeria's general elections fall just after this season. INEC has set the presidential and National Assembly elections for 16 January 2027 and the governorship elections for 6 February 2027. Campaigning will be under way through December.
For most visitors this changes little. Still, stay away from political rallies, follow your government's travel advice, and keep plans flexible around the polling days. Movement is usually restricted on election day itself. If your trip runs into mid-January, plan to be home, or somewhere comfortable, on the 16th.
Party at night, culture by day
Most visitors spend December on repeat: sleep late, beach, concert, repeat. The ones who come home with the best stories also see the Lagos behind the party. That means the Yoruba history at the John Randle Centre, the Afro-Brazilian houses of Popo Aguda, the art on five floors of Nike Art Gallery, and the walk to the Point of No Return in Badagry.
