Lagos in December runs on late nights. Between the concerts and the beach clubs there are long, bright afternoons, and the city has far more to offer them than brunch. Here are 12 daytime experiences, grouped by area so you spend your time seeing Lagos rather than sitting in traffic.
Lagos Island and Ikoyi: history and the old city
1. Freedom Park
Freedom Park stands on the site of the old colonial-era Broad Street prison. It was reopened as a memorial and cultural park for Nigeria's 50th independence anniversary in 2010. Walk the grounds by day and read the history in its architecture. Come back in the evening if there is a show on.

2. John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History
This is a modern, beautifully designed museum telling the story of the Yoruba people, from origins and belief to language, art and the diaspora. It is the best single introduction to the culture most Lagosians grew up in, and an easy one to pair with the National Museum next door.
3. National Museum Lagos
Nigeria's flagship museum in Onikan holds archaeological and ethnographic collections from across the country's ancient cultures. Give it an unhurried hour or two, ideally straight after the John Randle Centre.
4. The Brazilian Quarter (Popo Aguda)
In the 19th century, formerly enslaved Africans returned from Brazil and Cuba and settled on Lagos Island. They brought an architectural style of their own, with ornate facades, balconies and plasterwork. Walking the streets of Popo Aguda is a lesson in the Atlantic world that very few visitors ever get.

5. Jazzhole
Jazzhole is a Lagos institution: a bookshop, record store and café in Ikoyi, full of Nigerian literature, highlife and afrobeat vinyl. It is the perfect slow hour after a morning of museums.
6. CBAAC: Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization
CBAAC was created as the custodian of the legacy of FESTAC '77, the landmark festival of Black and African arts that Lagos hosted in 1977. It is a quiet, specialist stop for anyone interested in pan-African art and history.
Lekki: art, nature and the family day
7. Lekki Conservation Centre
The canopy walkway here is one of the longest in Africa, strung above protected wetland forest. Go at opening time. The morning is cooler, the light is better, and you will be back in town before the afternoon heat.
Good for: families, photographers. Curate a Nature & Wellness day →
8. Nike Art Gallery
Nike Art Gallery has five floors of Nigerian art, from traditional adire textiles to contemporary painting and sculpture. It was founded by the artist Chief Nike Okundaye. You can browse for hours, and much of the work is for sale, which makes it the best place in Lagos to buy a meaningful December gift.

9. LUFASI Nature Park
LUFASI offers forest trails, picnic spots and open space, about as far from a nightclub as Lagos gets. It is a calm reset for families with young children, or for anyone recovering from the night before.
10. Upbeat Recreation Centre
If the teenagers are restless, Upbeat offers high-energy indoor activities in Lekki. It is a reliable half-day for groups of cousins and friends.
11. Markets, crafts and food
Look for carvings, beads and fabric at the Lekki arts and crafts market. If you are brave, go to Balogun Market on Lagos Island for fabric by the yard. Build lunch around local food, such as amala, pepper soup, suya or small chops, rather than another hotel buffet.
West of the city: the day that stays with you
12. Badagry and the Point of No Return
Badagry was one of West Africa's major slave ports. A day here usually takes in the Badagry Heritage Museum and the First Storey Building in Nigeria, built by missionaries in 1845. It ends with the boat crossing and walk across Gberefu Island to the Point of No Return on the Atlantic shore. It is a long, emotional and essential day. Leave Lagos early and plan to be back by evening.

Frequently asked questions
What can I do in Lagos during the day in December?
Visit the John Randle Centre and National Museum in Onikan, Freedom Park, the Brazilian Quarter, Nike Art Gallery, and the Lekki Conservation Centre canopy walkway. You can also take a full day trip to Badagry and the Point of No Return.
What is the best time of day for outdoor sites in Lagos in December?
Go early. Arrive at opening time for the Lekki Conservation Centre and other outdoor sites. The harmattan afternoons are hot and hazy.
How many places can I see in one day in Lagos?
Two places close together is the sweet spot. Lagos traffic makes crossing the city twice in a day slow, especially in December.
