Put a Senegalese, a Ghanaian and a Nigerian at one table and ask whose Jollof is best. You will not get a conversation, you will get a contest. On Saturday 22 August 2026, we turned that contest into a festival.
The Jollof Rice Trail
Every guest walked the same route, from where Jollof began, through the rivalry that keeps it alive, to the culture that turned it into a movement.
Senegal: The Origin
The story starts in Senegambia. Guests tasted thieboudienne, the fish-and-rice dish from which Jollof takes its name and its method, and heard how the old Wolof (Jolof) empire gave the world its most argued-over pot of rice.
Ghana: The Rivalry
Bold, smoky and never short of an argument. The Ghana trail made its case with fragrant rice and plenty of attitude, and guests voted as they went.
Nigeria: The Culture
Party Jollof, Lagos-style: smoky, spicy, scraped from the bottom of the pot. This is the version that has fed every Nigerian wedding, birthday and naming ceremony for decades.
What happened on the day
- Origins of Jollof: a storytelling session tracing the dish from Senegambia to Lagos.
- Three national kitchens, live: Senegalese, Ghanaian and Nigerian cooks working side by side.
- The Great Lagos Jollof Cook-Off: open entry, judged on taste, smoke and that all-important bottom-pot.
- The debate: “Is Nigerian Jollof the best?” Guests argued it out on the panel and in the crowd.
- Music and performance: live sets, cultural performances and a themed dining experience.
- Creators on the ground: 20 creators streamed the day live, taking the trail to more than a million people online.
“Jollof isn’t just food. It’s identity, competition, pride and community, all in one pot.”
Why food is our way into culture
Jollof is a story about migration, trade and identity in West Africa. People who would never sit through a history lecture will happily spend an afternoon arguing about rice, and learn a great deal along the way. That is the same idea behind our tours: the best way into Lagos culture is to experience it, not read about it.
Taste Lagos on a tour
If the trail gave you an appetite, our curated day tours add meals and drinks to heritage, art and nature stops across Lagos. Choose your locations, tell us what you like to eat, and we will build the day around it. Tours run Thursday to Sunday.
