Every October, Lagos celebrates the life and music of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the creator of Afrobeat, with Felabration. In 2026 it runs from 12 to 18 October at the New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja. The nights belong to the Shrine. Here is how to spend the days around it.
The Fela trail
Kalakuta Museum
Fela's former home in Ikeja is now a museum. You can see his rooms, stage costumes and personal belongings, and stand in the space where so much of the music and politics began. Visit during the day before a night at the Shrine.
The New Afrika Shrine
Run by Fela's family, the Shrine is the spiritual home of Afrobeat and the heart of Felabration. Even outside festival week, it is worth an evening.
Afrobeat on vinyl at Jazzhole
Jazzhole in Ikoyi is a bookshop, record store and café. Browse for Fela, highlife and afrobeat records, and books about the music and its era.
Culture by day
