Your parents talked about Lagos your whole life. Now you are finally going, maybe for Detty December, maybe for a wedding, maybe just to see it. This five-day itinerary is for diaspora first-timers who want the parties and the roots: one big experience a day, with the nights left free.
Before you land
- Check entry rules for your passport with the Nigeria Immigration Service. Nigerian passport holders do not need a visa; foreign passport holders need a visa or an approved online application.
- Carry a yellow fever vaccination certificate.
- Get a local SIM or eSIM on arrival. Mobile data makes everything easier, from maps to bank transfers.
- Bring a card, but plan for transfers and some cash. Naira is used for markets, tips and small vendors.
- Learn two words: E kaaro (good morning) and E se (thank you). People notice.
The five-day itinerary
Day 1: Arrive and settle
Do not schedule anything. Clear the airport, check in, eat properly and sleep. Lagos rewards people who pace themselves. If you have energy in the evening, have a relaxed dinner close to where you are staying.
Day 2: Island roots
Start at the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, then the National Museum next door. After lunch, walk the Brazilian Quarter (Popo Aguda) and finish at Freedom Park, the former colonial prison turned cultural park. By the end of the day you will understand the city your family came from far better. Build this day →
Day 3: Lekki art and nature
Be at the Lekki Conservation Centre canopy walkway at opening time. Spend the afternoon at Nike Art Gallery, five floors of Nigerian art, and buy one piece to take home. Build this day →
Day 4: Badagry and the Point of No Return
This is the day that stays with you. Leave early for Badagry's museums and the walk to the Point of No Return on the Atlantic shore. Plan a quiet evening afterwards. Read our Badagry day trip guide first. Build this day →
Day 5: Markets, food and the beach
Shop for fabric and crafts, eat your way through suya, amala and small chops, and finish the afternoon at a beach club. Tonight, you are fully ready for Lagos after dark.
The nights
In December, the evenings take care of themselves: concerts, rooftop parties and family gatherings. See the full event calendar on our Detty December 2026 hub, and book concert tickets only from official sellers.
First-timer tips
- Traffic is the plan. Build each day in one part of the city.
- Heat is real. Do outdoor sites in the morning and drink more water than you think you need.
- Family will fill your calendar. Block your culture days early and protect them.
- Mind the elections. The presidential election is on 16 January 2027. If you are staying into January, plan a quiet day at home.
